Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is home to some of the most significant Mayan Ruin sites in all of the Americas, and can be visited easily from your hotel in Cancun or the Riviera Maya.
Chichen Itza is considered by many to be the most important ancient city of the Mayan Culture and has the most amazing examples of architecture in ancient Mayan society. The largest and most impressive of the Cancun Mayan ruins of the Yucatan, Chichen Itza is a spectacular and mystical place to visit. If you only want to do one tour this vacation, this should be it. There is only one Chichen Itza!
Tulum, considered by many as the most beautiful of the Mayan Ruins sites around Cancun, is small but exquisitely poised on the fifteen-meter-high cliffs above the azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. Tulum isn't the largest or most impressive of the Mayan Ruins of the Yucatan, but thanks to the awe-inspiring setting, it sticks in the memory like no other. It is also the nearest to Cancun.
If you're looking for more Mayan Ruins than just the popular tours of Tulum and Chichen Itza, Coba is probably for you. Coba covers an immense area of some 50 square km. The ancient city was begun in A.D. 600, and thousands of Maya are believed to have lived here during the Classic period. Bicycles are available to rent and are well worth the investment.
